Chipped or Cracked Tooth

A chipped or cracked tooth can affect your smile, your bite, and your comfort — but it's highly treatable.

A chipped or cracked tooth can happen in an instant — biting down on something hard, a sports injury, or even the cumulative stress of grinding your teeth over time. Regardless of how it happened, a damaged tooth should be evaluated promptly to prevent the damage from spreading and to restore both function and appearance.

At Clayton Dental Studio, we offer a range of solutions for chipped and cracked teeth, from cosmetic bonding for minor chips to same-day crowns for more significant fractures. Dr. Kamboj will assess the extent of the damage and recommend the most conservative, effective treatment.

Understanding Tooth Fractures

Not all chips and cracks are the same. A minor chip in the enamel may be purely cosmetic and easily repaired with bonding or a veneer. A crack that extends deeper into the tooth — toward the pulp or root — is a more serious matter that may require a crown or, in some cases, root canal therapy to address infection or nerve involvement.

Craze lines are tiny, superficial cracks in the outer enamel that are extremely common and typically require no treatment. A fractured cusp, on the other hand, involves a larger piece of the tooth breaking off, often around an existing filling, and usually requires a crown to restore the tooth's shape and strength.

If you've cracked a tooth and are experiencing pain when biting, sensitivity to temperature, or intermittent sharp pain, these are signs that the crack may have reached the pulp. Early treatment dramatically improves the chances of saving the tooth.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Visible chip, fracture line, or missing piece of tooth

Our Approach

How We Treat Chipped or Cracked Tooth

Same-Day

Same-Day Crowns

For teeth with significant cracks or fractures, a dental crown is often the best solution. It encases the entire visible portion of the tooth, protecting it from further damage and restoring full function. With our CEREC technology, your custom crown is designed, milled, and placed in a single appointment.

  • Custom crown designed and placed in one visit
  • Protects the tooth from further fracturing
  • Natural-looking ceramic material
  • No temporary crown required

Cosmetic Dentistry

Minor chips that are purely cosmetic can often be repaired with dental bonding or porcelain veneers — restoring the natural shape and appearance of the tooth without the need for a crown.

  • Dental bonding for small chips
  • Porcelain veneers for a complete aesthetic restoration
  • Matched to your natural tooth color
  • Minimally invasive options available

Frequently Asked Questions

My chipped tooth doesn't hurt. Do I still need to see a dentist?

Yes. Even a painless chip can have a sharp edge that irritates soft tissue, and it may be more vulnerable to further fracture. A quick evaluation will determine whether treatment is needed.

Can a cracked tooth be saved?

In most cases, yes — especially when caught early. The treatment depends on the depth and location of the crack. Dr. Kamboj will assess the tooth thoroughly and discuss all available options with you.

What if my tooth is completely broken off?

If a large piece of your tooth has broken off, call us immediately. Bring the fragment if you can find it. Depending on the situation, the tooth may be restorable with a crown or other treatment.
