Stained or Discolored Teeth

Discoloration is one of the most common cosmetic concerns — and one of the most satisfying to treat.

Tooth discoloration affects nearly everyone to some degree. Whether your teeth have gradually yellowed over the years, developed surface stains from coffee or red wine, or have deeper discoloration from medications or trauma, there are effective solutions available at Clayton Dental Studio.

Dr. Kamboj will evaluate the type and cause of your discoloration to recommend the most appropriate treatment — from professional whitening for surface stains to veneers for deeper or more complex cases.

Understanding Tooth Discoloration

Tooth discoloration falls into two main categories: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains affect the outer surface of the enamel and are typically caused by foods, beverages (coffee, tea, red wine), tobacco use, and inadequate oral hygiene. These stains respond well to professional whitening treatments.

Intrinsic discoloration originates within the tooth itself. It can result from certain antibiotics (particularly tetracycline) taken during tooth development, excessive fluoride exposure, trauma that caused internal bleeding within the tooth, or simply the natural aging process as enamel thins and the darker dentin beneath becomes more visible.

It's important to understand that not all discoloration responds to whitening. Intrinsic stains, white spots, and discoloration caused by certain medications may require cosmetic solutions such as veneers or bonding to achieve a uniform, bright result.

Cosmetic Dentistry

For intrinsic stains, uneven coloring, or cases where whitening alone is insufficient, porcelain veneers or dental bonding offer a complete cosmetic solution. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that cover the front surface of the teeth, providing a permanently bright, uniform appearance.

  • Porcelain veneers for deep or stubborn discoloration
  • Dental bonding for isolated spots or stains
  • Custom-matched to your ideal shade
  • Long-lasting, stain-resistant results

Frequently Asked Questions

How white can my teeth get?

Results vary based on the original shade and type of staining. Most patients achieve a noticeably brighter smile with professional whitening. Dr. Kamboj will give you a realistic expectation during your consultation.

Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or bonding?

Whitening agents only work on natural tooth enamel. Existing restorations will not change color. If you have visible restorations, we'll discuss how to achieve a uniform result.

Is professional whitening safe?

Yes. Professional whitening performed or supervised by a dentist is safe and effective. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during or after treatment, which resolves quickly.
