Worn or Damaged Teeth
Teeth that have been ground down, eroded, or structurally compromised need prompt restoration to prevent further damage.
Over time, teeth can become worn, weakened, or structurally compromised through a variety of causes — from bruxism (teeth grinding) and acid erosion to large old fillings that have begun to fail. When teeth lose their natural structure, they become more vulnerable to fracture, sensitivity, and further decay.
At Clayton Dental Studio, we restore damaged teeth with solutions that rebuild their strength, protect them from further harm, and bring back a natural, healthy appearance.
What Causes Tooth Wear and Damage?
Bruxism — the habit of grinding or clenching the teeth, often during sleep — is one of the most common causes of significant tooth wear. Over years, grinding can flatten the biting surfaces of the teeth, shorten their length, and cause sensitivity, fractures, and jaw pain. Many patients don't realize they grind until a dentist points out the signs.
Acid erosion is another significant contributor to tooth wear. Frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages (citrus, soda, sports drinks) or acid reflux can gradually dissolve the enamel, leaving teeth looking translucent, rounded, or discolored. Unlike mechanical wear, acid erosion affects all surfaces of the teeth.
Large, aging amalgam (silver) fillings can also compromise a tooth's structural integrity over time. As the filling expands and contracts with temperature changes, it can create micro-fractures in the surrounding tooth structure, eventually leading to cracks or breakage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I grind my teeth?
Many grinders are unaware of the habit because it happens during sleep. Signs include worn or flattened teeth, jaw soreness or headaches in the morning, and a partner reporting grinding sounds at night. Dr. Kamboj checks for signs of bruxism at every exam.
Can worn teeth be restored?
Yes. Depending on the extent of wear, options range from dental bonding for minor cases to crowns or veneers for more significant damage. In severe cases, a full-mouth rehabilitation may be recommended.
Will I need a night guard?
If grinding is the cause of your tooth wear, a custom night guard is typically recommended to protect your teeth and any restorations from further damage. Dr. Kamboj can fabricate a custom-fit guard for you.
