Before you arrive
Toothache: Rinse gently with warm water and floss to remove any trapped food. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs. Do not place aspirin directly against the gum.
Knocked-out tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently only if it is dirty, and do not scrub it. If you can, place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in milk or saline. Call us immediately, because time matters for saving the tooth.
Lost crown or filling: Keep the restoration if you have it, and avoid chewing on that side.
Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have facial swelling that spreads, a fever with swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop.
